Grand Theft Hamlet launches on Mubi

Gamers are back in the spotlight after a documentary shot exclusively within Grand Theft Auto Online was released on streaming platform Mubi

Grand Theft Hamlet follows two out-of-work actors trying to stage a production of Hamlet within online gameplay. Predictably, it doesn’t go smoothly. From curious interlopers to mid-speech shoot outs, the stars had a hilarious introduction to their first attempt at ‘Roleplay’, or ‘RP’.

→ What is Roleplay? RP is where creators act out their own stories within games. Basically it’s like streaming, but you create the story.

Famous RP creators include Valkyrae whose GTA romance with a serial-killer clown broke the internet, and streamers in the World of Warcraft guild ‘Only Fangs’ who are living Season 2 of their soap opera.

🔮
What’s next? Grand Theft Hamlet star Sam Crane said he was inspired to make a GTA production when he watched RP streams. Likewise, the popularization of this type of content in traditional media, like cinemas and TV, could see more streamers push the boundaries of their content.

YouTube golf puts creators in the spotlight

Previously reserved for your granddad, golf TV has had a Gen-Z resurgence. The culprit? YouTube golf.

Creators like Gabby Golf Girl and Bob Does Sports have turned an inaccessible, ‘boring’ sport into must-see watching. And traditional sports media has taken note.

The PGA Tour’s Creator Classic Series returned for a second session this March, after last year’s golf-luencer tournament clocked 2.7 million views on YouTube. This time, 10 golf creators took to arguably the PGA Tour’s toughest golf course, TPC Sawgrass, and were… surprisingly good?

🤔
So what? Platforms like YouTube and TikTok are now often people’s first introduction to a sport. And with creators like Good Good Golf receiving $45 million investment and teaming up with legacy brands like Callaway to take their brands global, we could start to see creator-led events become more popular than traditional media.

But what does the world think?

“It missed what made us special.”  Good Good's Garrett Clark said that Creator Classic struggled to blend traditional broadcasting with YouTube.

“I’d rather watch competitive [golf].” → Professional golfer Rory McIlory prefers it old-school.

I’d rather watch paint dry.” → Uppbeat Marketer Emma won't be tuning in again.
